Taxable Investing & 20% Savings Rate

Reach a 20% savings rate

Your tax-advantaged accounts are full. This step opens a simple taxable brokerage for everything beyond them, lifts your total savings rate to 20%, and schedules a yearly 1% raise so it keeps climbing on its own.

Your goal A 20% total savings rate + your first $10,000 in taxable investing, within 12 months.
What & why

The savings rate is the lever.

Any dollar you save beyond the tax-advantaged limits has nowhere to go but a taxable brokerage — no contribution limits, no withdrawal-age rules. Without it, the money piles up in checking and earns almost nothing.

3–4 yrs

Raising your total savings rate from 15% to 20% cuts roughly three to four years off the path to financial independence — more than almost any investment return you could chase.

Once it's compounding, the habit is set.

Auto-escalation
+1% per year

Tied to your annual raise, until you reach your target.

"Taxable" is less scary than it sounds. Gains on investments held more than a year are taxed at 0–20%, well below income-tax rates, and broad index funds rarely trigger taxes until you sell. Hold international stock funds here and keep bond funds in your 401(k) or IRA, where their interest is sheltered.

Questions

Common questions & mistakes

Why invest in a taxable account if gains get taxed?
Long-term rates are 0–20% and index funds generate little taxable activity. Cash in checking is taxed as ordinary income and earns almost nothing.
Isn't 15% enough to retire comfortably?
It can be if you started saving early. For most professionals who start in their 30s, 20% is the safe zone and 25%+ opens early-exit options.
Should I pick individual stocks?
No. More than 80% of actively managed funds trail their benchmarks over 10+ years. Low cost and diversification are the edge.
What about tax-loss harvesting?
Worth doing once your balance grows — but it's fine-tuning. Get the account and automatic buy running first.
What are the common mistakes?
Letting cash pile up in checking, chasing stocks or last year's hot fund, paying high fees, and cancelling the yearly bump "just for now."
