Free Money Capture

The only guaranteed 50–100% return you'll ever get

Your employer's 401(k) match is free money sitting on the table. Grabbing it beats every other use of a dollar — even paying down debt.

Your goal Capture 100% of your employer match, verified on a paycheck within 14 days.
What & why

Nothing else returns 50–100% instantly.

When your employer matches your contribution, they hand you 50 cents or a full dollar for every dollar you put in — before the market does anything. Even 25% credit-card debt can't compete with that, which is why the match comes before debt payoff.

Your only job here is to contribute at least enough to earn the full match — "100% of the first 3%" or "50% of the first 6%" are common formulas. You'll push contributions higher later, in Phase 2. And setting that percentage is the automation: from then on the money moves from every paycheck before you ever see it.

Questions

Common questions & mistakes

Shouldn't I pay off debt before contributing anything?
Not before capturing the match — it returns 50–100% instantly. After the match, debt does come before extra investing.
What if my employer doesn't offer a match?
Skip straight to Step 10. If you're self-employed, your own accounts come into play in Phase 2.
Should I contribute more than the match while I'm in here?
Not yet. Capture exactly the match and move on — you'll push toward the max in Phase 2.
What if I might leave my job soon?
Check your vesting schedule. Your own contributions are always yours; only the employer's portion may vest over time.
What are the common mistakes?
Contributing just under the threshold, skipping the match to pay off debt, and leaving contributions in a money-market default instead of a fund.
