Goal-Specific Wealth Building

Fund the life you designed

Now point the same automatic system at everything else in your Dream Build — the house, the kids' education, the sabbatical. One rule: retirement never drops below 20%.

Your goal Fund [your goal] to $X by [date] — while keeping retirement savings at 20%.
What & why

Goals live on top of 20%, not instead of it.

Your Dream Build from Step 1 finally gets dollars pointed at it. The mistake to avoid is funding goals at the expense of retirement. If a goal would push retirement below 20%, the goal's timeline moves — not the retirement rate.

$76K

What $10,000 not invested at age 30 costs you by 65 at a 7% return. That's the math behind the 20% rule.

Recommended setup

Right account for each goal — kept separate

One goal, one account

Separate accounts stop you from raiding one goal to fund another.
Education
529 plan
Tax-free growth for school; check your state's deduction
Home down payment
High-yield savings
2–5 year horizon — don't invest it
Early-retirement bridge
Taxable brokerage
Money you can reach before 59½
Experiences
Labeled savings or taxable
Under 3 years: savings. Longer: can invest

Rules of thumb: 20% down avoids PMI on a home (10% is a practical middle ground). 529s have no annual limit, but gifts above $19,000 per child ($38,000 for couples) count against the gift-tax exclusion.

Do it

One goal at a time

Confirm retirement is at 20% or more.
Check your 401(k), IRA, and HSA contributions. If you're below 20%, raise retirement first.
Pick one goal and give it a number and a date.
From your Dream Build — e.g. "$80,000 for college by 2037."
Open the right account for it.
529, high-yield savings, or brokerage — matched to the goal and kept separate.
Automate a monthly contribution.
Target ÷ months to the deadline. The day after payday.
Decide your windfall split in advance.
What share of bonuses and refunds goes to each goal. Re-check the 20% rule with every raise.
You're done when

Your Dream Build has dollars behind it

Retirement savings are confirmed at 20% or more and still automated.
Each chosen goal has a target, a deadline, and its own account — with at least one automatic monthly contribution running.
Questions

Common questions & mistakes

Should I save for my kids' college before my retirement?
No. There are loans and scholarships for college, but not for retirement. Underfunding retirement can leave you dependent on those same kids later.
529 or taxable brokerage for college?
529 if you're confident it'll go to education (tax-free growth). Taxable if the goal is uncertain and you want flexibility.
Should I pause retirement to save for a house faster?
Only briefly and only if you're early in your career and already saving well — never below 10%, and never skip the employer match.
Can I fund multiple goals at once?
Yes, but start with one. Automate it, confirm the 20% rule holds, then add the next.
What are the common mistakes?
Dropping retirement below 20%, mixing goals in one account, leaving goal money in checking, and waiting for a "bigger surplus" to start.
