adults can't say what they're actually worth, and even more can't name the interest rate on their own debts. Most money anxiety is a not-knowing problem — this step replaces the fog with facts.

Above or below 6%

Above 6% becomes a priority target later (Step 10). Below can wait.

Recommended setup

One spreadsheet, one sitting

Two columns and a line at the bottom

Real numbers from real logins, not memory.

Block 30–45 minutes, open one spreadsheet, and pull real balances in a single pass: what you own, what you owe, and the difference. Use AnnualCreditReport.com (free) to catch anything you forgot. Keep the file — you'll update it once a year.

Do it

Four moves

List every account and balance.
Checking, savings, retirement, brokerage, HSA, home value, car. Log into each and record the real number.
List every debt — with its rate.
Cards, student loans, car, mortgage, medical, buy-now-pay-later. Balance, interest rate, and minimum payment for each.
Pull your free credit report.
It catches forgotten accounts and debts. Free at AnnualCreditReport.com.
Subtract and flag.
Assets minus liabilities = your net worth. Then mark each debt above or below 6%.
You're done when

You have a starting line

Every account and every debt (balance, rate, minimum) is listed in one place, from real logins.
You have one net-worth number, and each debt is flagged above or below 6%.
Questions

Common questions & mistakes

What if my net worth is negative?
Completely normal, especially early in a career or after school. It's a starting line, not a grade — the whole plan exists to move it.
Do I need fancy software?
No. A plain spreadsheet beats any app you won't open.
How precise does it need to be?
Round to the nearest hundred. You want an accurate picture, not a to-the-penny audit.
Should I include my home and car?
Yes — list the value and the loan against it. Just don't count on selling your house to fund retirement.
What are the common mistakes?
Estimating from memory, forgetting easy-to-miss accounts (old 401(k)s, medical bills, financed purchases), and skipping the interest rates.
